Making Your Self Care More Balanced

You’ve seen me talking a lot about “Self Care” on my blog, website, and social media.  This is because I truly believe that taking these small moments to care for yourself on a regular basis are really important in today’s busy and stressful world.  Most of us spend a lot of time working just to survive, and caring for others.  It seems like there is precious little time for self care, and society somehow has taught us that any time spent not being productive is lazy or selfish.  (This is especially true in American society, though I know other cultures place more value in down time and relaxation.)  I spent many years focused on working and raising my kids, feeling guilty any time that I wasn’t busy or productive.  What did that get me?  I was angry a lot, stressed out all the time, and lacking in a true connection to Spirit and my Higher Self.  I was cut off from my intuition, and thus cut off from being able to see the magick in life all around me. self care, self care tips

Eventually this resulted in both my physical and mental health deteriorating – causing even more stress!  “You need to take care of yourself!” wise people would tell me.  But truthfully, I didn’t know how.  I thought I was taking care of myself . . . but eating and bathing and brushing my teeth just wasn’t enough.  What more did I need?  Vitamins?  Exercise? What really was “Self Care” at it’s core?

self care, meditation, yoga, spirituality, self care tips I spent some time exploring this concept and finding that for me, Self Care needed to be balanced in three different areas.  I needed Spiritual Self Care, Physical Self Care, and Fun or Pampering Self Care.  If I just did one of these but left out the other two then I wasn’t really taking care of my whole self and all the complex needs of human life!  Spiritual Self Care came in the form of Meditations, Tarot or Oracle Card Readings, and learning about the Spiritual and Metaphysical things that interested me. Basically taking time to connect with Spirit, and develop my Spiritual Practice.  The Physical Self Care came by doing something that was healthy for me – exploring different herbal remedies and teas or tinctures, yoga practices, or making sure I was getting enough sleep.

Of course the basic self care of things like bathing, brushing my teeth, drinking water, etc needed to be included too.  For some people these things come easier, but if you have ever battled with clinical depression or anxiety you will understand that sometimes even these basic things get pushed aside and neglected.  Finally, the Fun, or Pampering kind of Self Care is needed too.  This is the kind of Self Care that people think of the most often, but also the kind that an be seen as selfish or a waste of time.  (I think part of that is because a lot of these self care practices have been sensationalized by capitalism and tend to be rather expensive.  Just think of how much it can cost to get a massage, get your hair or nails done, or spend time at a fancy Spa.)  There is also a tendency to think of these things as frivolous or a form of vanity – especially when the media is always pushing these stereotypical images of rich girls going to the salon; girls who are also in some way vapid, selfish, and vain.  This stereotype has made these acts of self care seem taboo or just silly to many working class Americans, but to be honest we all crave these activities on some level too.  This is because we really do need these occasional “treat yo’ self” moments!  We don’t have to shell out the big bucks at a salon or spa to do these things though.  We can take a nice relaxing bath at home, wear some fuzzy socks, drink some yummy tea and paint our fingernails for the same effect.  The thought I used to have was, “I don’t have time for that.”  That’s the trap though, because it doesn’t matter exactly what you do for Pampering – it’s the act of taking time for yourself that really makes a difference!

self care, self care tips, relaxation, stress relief tipsWhen you take the time to incorporate these three kinds of self care into your life on a regular basis, you are saying to yourself, “I am worth spending time with.  I am worthy of love and attention.” You are giving equal value to your Spirit, your Body, and your Self and in that way you are getting a more well-rounded and balanced picture of who you are and what you need.  You’ll still need to work and take care of others as you did before, but you’re more present and more energized for those activities, because you’ve taken time to recharge your batteries.  Not just the physical batteries that recharge with sleep and food.  But all the other parts of your being that need to be recharged too.

self care, tarot card reading, oracle card readingThe thing is, it took me a long time to figure this out, and even then I needed some guidance along the way.  Something to focus on helped, if I had a theme, or a specific challenge to work on or a goal for my self care.  Having accountability, or friends to cheer me on really helped too. I ended up wanting to help others with this self care in some way so I started reading cards professionally.  I also learned Reiki so I could help others with Energy Healing, and I sell and make other Self-care focused items like soaps, bath bombs, and mala necklaces for meditation.  Recently I was inspired!  I was thinking about all these things and how together, they could make a really complete Self Care package.  I know there are people out there like me, who know the importance of self care but may just need that little bit of inspiration and motivation to really take their self care deeper and touch on all three of these main areas each month.

That’s how I was inspired to bring you these Self Care subscription Boxes every month!  Including a card reading and some kind of meditation or ritual each month, along with some tools for Pampering and self care like a Bath Bomb, herbal tea, and possibly more, I want to offer you a well rounded package to help you take your Self Care deeper.  So I’ll be offering four different size packages each month.  You can decide what size package you want each month – or even to order at all that month!  You’ll get your personal card reading (by email) and then your package with other goodies that will encourage you and inspire you to spend some quality time with yourself!

I’ll have a fun spiritual theme every month, and special info to help you get the most out of your self care package!  So what do you say?  Are you ready to join me?

Monday Musings – Grounding

I often have people ask me how they can protect themselves from being overwhelmed when sensing other people’s emotions or energies.  Many people identify as Empaths – persons who are highly sensitive to the moods and feelings of people around them.  Going out in public or crowded places can be overwhelming and anxiety inducing to these people – as they can feel others’ grief, anxiety, or anger as if it were their own.  I wanted to compile a list of different techniques for Grounding and Shielding that have helped me and other people.  (In this blog post I will just focus on Grounding and then I will write another about Shielding.)

If you are more grounded you will be much more able to let these energies you sense “slide off” rather than latching on and affecting you negatively.  The goal of an empath should not be to block these sensations, but to simply be able to notice and acknowledge them without being dragged down or trapped by the feeling.  We have this gift that enables us to help people and be better friends, healers, and counselors so we don’t want to block the ability to feel others’ emotions.  Yet at the same time we need to be able to function and go about our own lives! If you are not properly grounded you will have a much harder time doing this.

“Grounding”, “Centering” or “Earthing” is a simple process that we use to connect with the earth, our body, and the here & now.  You can practice grounding in any position – sitting, standing, or laying down.  Most people prefer putting the feet flat on the ground, which is helpful but not 100% necessary.  Grounding is just simply being more connected to the earth, your body, and the present moment. Being more connected to the present moment and the body is important for Empaths, who have a tendency to experience more on the astral or etheric realms, or “out there”.  But we are still physical beings and need to be able to ground ourselves to release excess energies we tend to collect, and also to replenish our “batteries.”
Here are a couple quick methods I use for Grounding:
5 senses excersize
Connect with your breath…. that means to simply bring your attention to your breathing for a few moments.  Next, simply notice your body, in particular the 5 senses of touch, smell, sight, sound, and taste. Notice your posture, the temperature of air touching your skin and the feel of the clothing you are wearing.  Notice any smells or scents.  Look around and simply take notice of the things you see around you.  What do you hear?  Try to notice sounds individually and identify where different sounds are coming from.  Finally notice the taste inside your mouth.  If you wish, take a small drink of water or eat a bite of something and try to just fully notice the sensation of taste.  As you go through each of the 5 senses try to keep noticing your breathing too.  Now you have brought your awareness simply and fully to your body and the present moment.  This practice alone can help relieve some anxiety and bring us back to our own senses rather than the senses projected outward from others.  The more you practice this technique of breathing and noticing each of the 5 senses, the easier it will become… until it becomes something much more second nature.
With frequent practice you will be able to eventually bring yourself fully into this state of awareness within your body by simply setting your intention to do so.  This is especially helpful if you use a key phrase as a trigger.  For example, say “Here and Now I am Breathing” as you focus on the breath.  Then, “Here and Now I can smell….” as you focus on the sense of smell.  And then, “Here and Now I see….” as you focus on the sense of sight, etc.  With consistent use of this key phrase “Here and Now” you can create a trigger for the relaxed state that is aware of all the senses.  When you have done this often enough, and you find yourself out in public and needing to quickly ground and center your energies, you can just take a deep breath and say “Here And Now” and you will find yourself automatically connecting to the senses and the breath.

Breathing Through Your Roots”
This is a combination of breathing and visualization that helps you connect with Earth Energy and feel more grounded and centered.  Place feet flat on the ground if you are in a chair, or you can sit cross-legged on the floor.  Connect with your breath (noticing your breathing and slowing the breath down to smooth, deep and steady pattern)  Visualize that you have Roots growing down out of the bottoms of your feet (if you are seated with feet flat on the ground) or roots growing out of your hips and sitting bone (if you are seated on the ground in cross- legged position.)
Take some time simply breathing and feeling your roots extend down into the earth.  Notice how it is darker, cooler, and quieter down there in the earth.  Recall the smell of soil and other pleasant sensations of nature.  You don’t have to be outdoors to connect with mother nature in this way simply use your intention and visualization.
Once you have established your roots, think of how the roots of a tree draw water and nutrients up from the earth into their trunk and branches.  Now when you inhale slowly, feel that you are breathing from your roots and that as the oxygen fills your lungs you are drawing energy up from your roots into your body.  (Picture the way a straw draws water up from the bottom when you drink with it.  You inhale and “suck” the energy up through your roots, into feet, up the legs, and then up the spine and outward to arms and fingers.) As you exhale, you release any “extra” energy you didn’t absorb – visualize and feel this energy emptying out of you back down your roots and into the earth.  You can also breathe out any negativity or anxiety, down those roots and into the earth.
Don’t worry about harming the earth by emptying these negative energies in this way.  Simply set your intention that you are releasing these energies to be healed.  Energy itself is neither good or bad, it just needs to be returned to it’s natural state where it doesn’t hold any vibrations of fear or pain.  Just focusing on breathing up through the roots – breathing in love…. and then emptying out the stress or worry out through the feet or sitting bones back into the earth for healing.  Practicing this a few minutes a day makes it come much easier and eventually you can very quickly connect with your roots and earth energy at any time.
FB: Echoes Of The Heart Healing
Earthing is the simple act of walking on the ground (outdoors) barefoot.  Feeling the sand, grass, dirt, leaves, etc directly touching the soles of your feet can relieve stress, improve circulation, lift your mood, and bring you closer to Mother Nature.  When you combine Earthing with intentional grounding excersizes like the two listed above, the experience of grounding is more empowered.  However, due to weather, location, or physical disabilities, this may not always be an option which is why I listed the other two methods first… they can be done even when you do not have access to the outdoors.  I do recommend trying to go outside and get fresh air and sunlight even if you are unable to walk barefoot on the ground.  Studies have shown that spending more time outdoors (even if it is just sitting on your porch and looking at the sky or a tree) is beneficial to your health and mood.
FB: Crystal Guidance

Crystals and Gemstones to Assist with Grounding
Carrying, wearing, or meditating with these crystals or gemstones may help you as you practice getting grounded and centered.  Hematite, Smoky Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, Onyx, and Green Moss Agate all can help you fee more grounded and connect with earth energy more readily.
Remember Basic Self Care
Getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and eating healthy foods with plenty of fiber is essential for an Empath to feel grounded and centered.  The world of emotions and feelings is so richly and deeply felt by empaths that the physical realm can seem less important or like a less valid part of our human experience.  This is simply not true, and taking care of ourselves physically is a big part of being an Empath, a Healer, an Intuitive or a Light Worker.
Seek Help From Other Healers
If you feel like you are “getting grounded” but the feeling doesn’t last or dissipates as soon as you leave the meditation area or enter a room of crowded people, there may be some deeper spiritual and energetic work that needs to be done.  You may benefit from energy work such as Reiki to help remove blocks.  You may wish to seek out a Shaman, therapist or another sort of healer to help you work through past trauma or insecurities.  There is nothing wrong with seeking out help from others!
I hope that these ideas have helped you and given some ideas to help you with grounding!  Feel free to leave a comment with feedback or your own tips for grounding.

Centaur Tarot Spread

As promised in my previous post, here is a Tarot Spread I designed for use with Centaur or Sagittarius energy.  It’s perfect for today’s Full Moon!

As with before any reading or ritual, please remember to ground and center, and set up protections in whatever way you do.  Calling on Archangel Michael, or asking for a ring of angels to protect you, or calling the quarters and elements and setting a circle of protection by visualizing a shield of light around you.  Whatever feels comfortable and safe to you.

Tarot Spread – Lesson of The Centaur
Make sure you read the post all about Centaurs.  There I cover the three gifts or lessons of the Centaur which are; Knowledge/Wisdom, Victory/Assertiveness, and Healing.

With this spread you will use Temperance as a Significator card. Simply find this card in the deck, and place it in front of you.  Meditate on the meanings of this card and the Centaur’s lessons.  Use the affirmation, “I enthusiastically manage my needs and resources to bring about health and harmony”.  Think about the meanings of the Temperance Card of integration, balance, moderation, and transformation.  Think about the Centaurs and how they teach us integration of Healing, Intellect, and Passion.  In what ways in your life do you need this integration and balance?

Prayer (while shuffling the cards)
“I call upon the mighty centaur: warrior, hunter, healer, seeker of wisdom, and great teacher.  I call upon you now, be my teacher.  Show me what I need to know at this time and teach me to inte body, mind, and spirit.”

Divide the deck into three stacks.  Take the first stack from the top of the deck, and place it in position one.  Take the second stack from the deck, and place it in position 2.  The remaining cards go in stack 3.  Just let the cards naturally divide themselves into these stacks.

You will turn the top card of each stack over.

Card 1 is Centaur’s teaching or lesson for you at this time concerning your healing. Picture the Centaur handing you a cup of a healing elixir.  The card will show you what area of life this elixir will help you to heal.  This could be for your physical health, or emotional/spiritual healing.  Take this gift with deep gratitude.
Card 2, the scroll, is Centaur’s message to you about wisdom and learning.  This shows you where in your life you need to apply your intellect.  It could be something you need to learn more about, or an area of life in which you need to apply wisdom and logic rather than force or action.
Card 3, the Sword… this is where Centaur is offering you help in the form of action.  Your passion and assertiveness will help you in this area of life.  This is also where the centaurs will offer to help fight for you to obtain victory in your goal.
Meditate and journal about all three of these cards.  Be sure to interpret them through the lens and lessons of the Temperance card, which reminds you that each of these energies of the cup, scroll, and sword need to be used in moderation, balanced with each other, and integrated into your life with patience.
Thank the Centaurs for their lessons.  You may wish to leave them an offering of some kind (food or drink – they really love wine or alcohol if you have any to put in a small cup or bowl to leave for them in gratitude for their help) or at least sincerely thank them for their help.
Blessed Be!

Centaurs ~ Fire Elementals ~ Sagittarius

We have the full moon in Sagittarius coming up on Saturday May 21. With the full moon in a Fire Sign I felt like it would be a good time to connect with Fire Elementals, and specifically the Centaur.  Most people wouldn’t instantly think of Centaurs as Fire Elementals – so let’s examine Sagittarius energy traits alongside the personality traits of Centaurs and you’ll see why I feel like they are definitely Fire Elementals!!

Temperance from The Celestial Tarot

Sagittarius is the masculine, mutable fire sign of the zodiac: energetic, ambitious, generous spirits who love and value freedom, enjoy challenges and intellectual pursuits. Ruled by Jupiter – the planet of expansion, higher education, growth and travel. Sagittarians are generally open to new ideas, exploration and seeking knowledge. Sagittarius energy is active, ambitious, passionate and sexual – embodying the element of Fire.  Positive traits are: optimistic, outgoing, expansive, ethical, freedom loving, exploratory, and honest or being straight forward. Negative traits can include: domineering or controlling, opinionated, judgemental, blunt, competitive, and overindulgent.  Sagittarius’ fiery passion combined with a strong intellect and quest for knowledge creates an energy signature that is constantly seeking balance between wisdom and instinct. They will fight when necessary (and even be overly aggressive if their goal is slipping away from them) but in turn they can also be that intellectual and spiritually wise person you know.
This balance between competive instinct and rational intellect is evident in the stories and legends of Centaurs.

Centaurs are half man, half horse, representing the marriage of animal instinct and strength with human intellect and wisdom. (Some may say that the horse aspect is what represents their kind, gentle, and wise nature while it is their human side that brings in the aggressive nature. Food for thought). In Greek mythology, Centaurs were a wild and unruly lot; who liked to drink and fight, what we would call today a “macho man”. They have a lot of passion, a strong sexual energy, and are certainly interested in conquest of all kinds. (Look out ladies, the Centaur will probably flirt with you and try to show off his strength to get your attention!) Can you begin to see why they are Fire Elementals?!?
However, legends also revere Centaurs as great teachers, healers, and guardians – so they’ve got that Sagittarian balance between instinct and intellect. On the Illustration of the Centaur card from the ” Mythical Creatures Oracle“, Sky Cybele has depicted the Centaur holding both a club and a scroll – symbolically the Sword and the Pen. She says if you were to ask a Centaur, “Which is mightier, the pen or the sword?” Centaur wouldn’t know the answer as he sees them both as equally powerful and necessary. (Pictured below)
If you choose to work with Centaurs, you can ask them to help you achieve balance between instinct and intellect. There are times when energy, action, and assertiveness is necessary – and times when those traits are certainly not appropriate! Alternatively, there are times intellect, wisdom, and learning are necessary – and times when instinct and gut feelings are better than “book smarts”. Centaurs love to teach and guide others, and can help you know when it is best to be seeking the route of wisdom and learning, or when it is best to be active and assertive or follow your passions.

Centaur from The Mythical Creatures Oracle by Sky Cybele

It is also important to know about the King of the Centaurs – Chiron.  Chiron was known as a very wise leader and teacher – perhaps not as prone to aggression as his fellow Centaurs. Son of the Titan God; Saturn, and pupil of the God Apollo, Chiron was friend and confidant to both Gods and Men. (Again, a strong connection of balance between the Higher Realm of consciousness and the Lower Realm of physicality) The Gods taught Chiron about hunting, medicine, music, and prophecy – and in turn Chiron taught these things to men. Among Chiron’s famous pupils were Hercules, Achilles, Jason, and the twins Castor & Pollux.
Here is the story of Chiron’s injury and how he became a constellation. Some say he was hunting a wild boar with Hercules, others say he was with Hercules (his friend) when a battle broke out among some other Centaurs. Either way, he was accidentally struck on the leg by Hercules’ poisoned sword. Since Chiron was immortal this wound did not kill him, but the poison made the wound very painful and impossible to heal.  Chiron’s suffering was great, and he set himself to the task of searching for a cure – or to find a way to die to escape his suffering. Hercules went on a quest to help his friend find a way to die, while Chiron studied medicine and healing. During this time, Chiron discovered many cures and healing practices (none of which cured him) and he passed those cures and the healing wisdom on to others…. So here we see Chiron as the archetype of the Wounded Healer – a powerful archetype for healers to work with, especially those who are chronically I’ll or disabled and yet drawn to the path of healing others.
Hercules, on his journey found the suffering Prometheus who was chained forever to a rock where an eaghle tore at his eyes, kidneys, and liver every day. Jupiter had cursed Prometheus to suffer until someone of their free will offered to take his place. Hercules told Chiron of Prometheus. Chiron was already suffering in anguish every day, and had all but given up on his search for a cure, so he agreed to take Prometheus’ place. Thus, Prometheus was freed from his curse. For his sacrifice, Chiron was awarded by the Gods and allowed to die – Thus relieving his suffering at last too. Jupiter further awarded Chiron by placing him among the stars –  as the constellation now known as Sagittarius.
Within Chiron’s story we find the traits of a great healer, a teacher, and a compassionate, self a sacrificing, and loyal friend. This is Sagittarius energy in it’s most balanced and enlightened form – one who has mastered the competitive and macho energy of fire and masculinity, and transmuted it into generosity, ethical asmbition, and knowledge seeking not just for the self but for the greater good of all.

Temperance from the Radiant Rider-Waite Smith Tarot

In the Tarot, Sagittarius is embodied in the Major Arcana card Temperance. Key words for this card are: Blending, Balance, Timing, Discipline, Self-Control, Compromise, Moderation, Alchemy, Healing, Distillation, and Flexibility. You can see how the meaning of the Temperance card relates to the story of Centaurs, Chiron, and Sagittarius energy. You can meditate on this card or journal with it to help you connect with Centaur and Sagittarius energy. Also, if this card comes up for you in a reading, perhaps it is a sign that the Fire Elementals Centaurs are near and want to work with you to teach you moderation and balance.

Working with Centaurs as Spirit Guides
You can connect with these powerful fire elementals any time you want to. Make sure you ground and center yourself, and set up protections – though Centaurs aren’t malevolent or mean spirited, they can be strong-willed and they like to play rough. You can call on Archangel Michael for protection, as well as setting clear boundaries about what you will and will not allow (this is a good idea for working with any of the elementals and fairies) You do this by simply and clearly stating your intention at the beginning of your ritual or meditation. One way to invoke a Centaur is to have a fire (in a safe fire pit in your back yard or campground), play some upbeat music or drum beats, and leave an offering of wine or alcohol (the centaurs enjoy drinking) and invite the Centaurs to join you while you meditate on their lessons. You can set up an altar – this can be placed near the outdoor fire, or indoors to be used if you can’t have a fire outdoors – as a place to honor them, work with them, and meditate with them.  Some suggestions for your altar: candles for the fire element, a picture or small figurine of a centaur, an image of the constellation Sagittarius, pictures or figurines of horses, a book and pen to represent wisdom & learning, a knife or sword, or bow and arrow (or small figurines or pictures of these) to represent their battle skills and hunting abilities, the tarot card Temperance, and symbols or representations of health, healing, and medicine.
You can meditate at this asltar to meet your Centaur guide, or ask for their assistance in your life. The centaurs can help you in manifesting a dream to go to school or get a scholarship, or to help you study and get good grades in school. They can help you manifest a good doctor or help you in finding a healer, energy worker, or medical practitioner to help you with healing. They can help you attain your goal of becoming a healer and assist you in your healings of yourself and others. And most of all, Centaurs can help you find balance, be more assertive, bring passion to your sex life, and help you in challenges and competitions.

Bedroom Magick – Sleep & Dreams

Here are some more ideas for further exploration of The Bedroom as a place of Magick. I discussed some of the magickal aspects of the bedroom in a previous post, and have included a post with spells for Sex and one for a Mindfulness while making the bed.  Let’s talk about Sleep!

Sleeping and Dreaming have long been associated with Magick.  They continue to be mysterious to us, even with more and more scientific studies emerging about sleeping and dreaming.   If you approach your time of sleep with an attitude of wonder, respect, and magick, it can increase the spirituality of this time for you.  Here are some correspondences and associations that go along with sleep and dreaming;

Make a Dream Pillow or a Sleep Pillow
Using the correspondences above, you can make a Sleep Pillow or a Dream pillow.  Get some cloth of the corresponding color for what you want (you may want to make one for helping you fall asleep, or you may want to make one for helping you remember your dreams or for promoting Lucid Dreaming or Astral Travel.)  Cut two six-inch squares of the fabric and sew them together, leaving one side open to add the stuffing. Fill half full with cotton batting or your fiber of choice.  Then add dried herbs of your choice from the corresponding list above.  You may also wish to tuck a gemstone or two from the list as well.  You can write a simple prayer or the word “Sleep” or “dream” on a small piece of paper and put that in the pillow as well.  Sew it shut after it is filled, visualizing your intent and the energy of sleeping or dreaming flowing into the pillow.  You may wish to place a couple drops of corresponding essential oil on the pillow.  For added effect, create your pillow on the day of the week associated with your intention, or when the moon is in the corresponding astrological sign.  You may also choose to bless or consecrate your pillow as you see fit. Keep the pillow on your bed and sleep with it at night. You can also make one for children for helping them sleep or for promoting peaceful dreams.

Some recipes for Herb Pillows –

  • For prophetic dreams stuff with dried mugwort and nutmeg and use frankincense oil.  If you are sensitive or have many personal problems you may not want to sleep with this pillow often as it can bring about very intense dreams.
  • For headache relief or to guard against nightmares; 1 oz. lavender flowers, 1/2 oz. verbena, 1/2 oz. lemon balm, 1/2 oz rosemary
  • Men’s sleep pillow; 1 oz. lemon verbena, 1 oz. lavender flowers, a pinch each of thyme and mint
  • Cherokee Dream Pillow
The following mixture is said to bring prophetic dreams.  Use dried herbs & flowers.  2 oz. lavender flowers, 2 oz. sage, 1 oz. ground orris root, 2 oz. deer tongue herb, 1 oz. cedar shavings, 2 oz. coltsfoot herb, 2 oz. sweet fern, 1 oz. violet flowers

Blessing Your Sheets To Promote Sleep
On a Wednesday or when the Moon is in Virgo, wash your sheets.  When you’re ready to put them in the washer place a couple tea bags of chamomile tea in a clean sock with some dried lavender or drops of lavender oil.  Tie the sock closed or secure it with a string. Place it in the Washer with your sheets and say;
Chamomile, Lavender work as a balm; Bring to my bed Peace and Calm!”
You can place the herb-filled sock in the dryer with the sheets also, and repeat the prayer.

Tea for Clairvoyant Dreams
You may want to drink this tea to accompany your Dream Pillow.
1 tsp. chamomile
1 tsp. mugwort
1 tsp. thyme
1 tsp. rosemary

Tea For Peaceful Sleep
You may want to drink this tea to accompany your sleep pillow, or any night right before bed.
equal parts (about 1 tsp. each)
peppermint, chamomile, catnip, valerian, skullcap, passionflower, strawberry leaf

Sleep Prayer
If you are having trouble falling asleep, you can repeat this prayer at bedtime or as you lay in bed
Sleep Come Easy
Sleep Come Fast
Sleep Come Tonight
and Through The Night Last

Some Tips For Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
If you have trouble sleeping, falling asleep, or experience insomnia, here are some tips to help.

  • Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening.  Also avoid foods with added sugar.  Drink a calming, relaxing tea such as chamomile or passionflower.
  • Have a clean, tidy bedroom.  The energy in the room will be much more peaceful and help promote sleep if the space is free of clutter.  Also having your kitchen sink clean and empty before bed is said to help promote sleep.
  • If the “things I need to do tomorrow” keep you awake, make a list of things you need to do before you go to bed.  Having a list will help ease your mind and you won’t be so worried about forgetting these things.
  • Take a walk, do yoga, stretch or do some Tai Ji before bed.  Peaceful movement will help bring your body to a more relaxed peaceful state.
  • Meditation.  Meditate for 10 to 15 minutes before bed.  With or without music, just dedicate some time to peacefully sitting in silence.  Focus on your breathing and relaxing your body.  The more you practice this the easier it will become.
  • Go to bed at the same time every night.  This helps your body establish a set sleep schedule.
  • Have a routine.  If you practice some or all of the above tips consistently before bed, then when you do them you’re sending the message to your mind and body that it is time for sleep.  If they don’t help the first few nights, keep going and be persistent and consistent.  Eventually when you have established a routine and keep a regular bedtime, you should have a much easier time falling asleep.

Spell; Invoke The Great Mother Goddess for Wisdom
You’ll need;
A blue or purple candle in a fireproof holder
Essential oil of Lotus (or Jasmine or Myrrh)
A small statue of an Owl (or a picture of an owl)
A journal and pen
A deck of tarot cards or a set of runes
optional; a dream pillow made with the correspondences above and cup of dream-promoting tea

Anoint the candle with the essential oil and place it in the candle holder.  Place the owl next to the candle and your deck of cards or set of runes on the other side of the candle.  Cast your circle or set the boundaries as you wish.  Call upon any Mother Goddess of Wisdom that you choose, (Isis, Hera, Athene, Frejya, etc) or simply call the Great Mother Goddess.  Meditate and simply talk with the Goddess awhile about why you seek wisdom and for what areas of your life you are seeking wisdom.  Write down in your journal these intentions and desires.

Light the candle and say;
Wise Mother, great counselor,
Teach me waking and sleeping.
Send me omens true and dreams wise.
Instruct me in your great wisdom.
I open my heart and mind to you, Wise Mother.
I ask for your all-knowing counsel and guidance
that Wisdom may come to me quickly!”

Lay out three tarot cards or runes in front of the candle and owl.  Write down any impressions, thoughts, and feelings that you receive while studying the cards.  When you are finished journaling your thoughts on your reading say;
Grant me skills of Clarity and Wisdom.
Great Mother, make me wise.
You who are both skillful and strong,
guide my steps, keep me from wrong.”

If you are including a Dream Tea in your ritual, drink it now.  When you are done, extinguish the candle.  Place the tarot cards or runes in a cloth bag and sleep with them under your pillow.  When you wake up, immediately write down anything you remember from your dreams.  Even if you don’t understand what the images meant.  You may choose to draw one tarot card or rune each day, and continue to journal your readings and your dreams for as long as you want.  You may light the candle and repeat the prayer each night before bed for as long as you like or until you feel like you have received the insight you are looking for.

Clear Your Space – The Bedroom

Last week I blogged about the importance of Getting rid of clutter and “Clearing Your Space” as your home environment, clutter and things around you have an effect on the energy in your home and flowing through you & your family.  I decided I needed to focus on getting rid of some clutter in my home and invited you to join me as I go room to room.  I started with The Bathroom and now I’m moving on to the Master Bedroom!
Not my room!  Just a nice picture!

Identifying The Energy Focus of the Bedroom
Everyone’s home and home life is a bit different.  Some people only use their bedrooms for sleeping and sex.  Some others may have a multi-purpose bedroom that is also their home office.  So to start, it’s best to identify how your bedroom is used, and what kind of energy you want to encourage in your bedroom.  Is it a Sanctuary?  Do you need better sleep?  Is it a place where you want more romance?  Are you trying to conceive a child?  Who do you share the room with?  Does the bedroom also have another use, such as a computer room / office?  Is there a meditation area or an altar?

I’m lucky to have a large bedroom, but it’s broken down into different areas.  Obviously I have my bed and a dresser with my clothes.  I also have a couple different altars and a meditation area.  My desk is in here with my computer – so yes it’s also an office.  Oh, and did I mention my son shares our bedroom with us?  (Due to the number of bedrooms in the house.  His bed and belongings are on the opposite side of the room from mine and my husband’s)

Since this is a multi-purpose room, and is used by all members of the family (because the kids need to use the computer too!) I find it easier to break my room down into sections rather than just “The Bedroom” as a whole.  If you have a smaller bedroom or don’t use it for as many purposes, this room’s energy will be a lot easier for you to identify.

You see, everything is energy – including our thoughts and wishes!  If our thoughts and wishes swirl around our room and get “stuck” on clutter – they just get bogged down and lose potency.  Plus, a big part of manifesting anything is feeling good!  If you’re content, happy, and not distracted or stressed out, it’s so much easier to use positive visualization, meditation, or ritual to manifest what you want!

Sleeping and Dreaming
Since MOST people use their bedrooms primarily for sleeping, we’ll start there.  There have been studies that show a clean and organized environment helps promote a better night’s sleep.  If your room is cluttered; laundry is on the floor, the bedside table is covered with junk, the dresser is in shambles, and even things piled up under your bed – well it’s no wonder you’re having trouble sleeping!  (Interesting note – in Feng Shui it is widely believed that a dirty kitchen sink will prevent a good night’s sleep as well!  So there’s another reason to wash those dishes and shine that sink before bed!)  Sleep is quite possibly one of the most magickal things we do.  While we sleep our body heals and rejuvenates itself – even regenerates new cells!  Our brains enter into states that they rarely enter during the day, and science has shown that these sleep states are crucial to our body’s health and healing ability.  And we dream!  Dreaming has long been associated with the magickal and mystical.  Whether we practice lucid dreaming, or receive messages from our ancestors, or just get to let our brains sort through our fears and worries – dreaming is an important part of life!  So, as you begin, just look around your bedroom and ask yourself; is this area helping me sleep?  What can be moved, organized, or simply gotten rid of to help me sleep better in this space?  I’ve found the simple acts of cleaning out under the bed, making the bed every day when I get up, and keeping the surfaces of any bedside tables neat and clean is very helpful in promoting a good night’s sleep.  You can also place some crystals near your bed to help you sleep, or make a sleep pillow with herbs in it.  I’ll be posting a couple tips and spells about sleeping and dreaming this week to go along with our bedroom topic!

Romance and Sex
Whether you’re in a relationship or not – if sex is going to happen it will probably happen in the bedroom!  Hey, by all means be adventurous!  If you prefer the couch or the kitchen table, go for it!  But I’m guessing those other places are for sometimes and the bed is going to be the most comfortable and natural place for those things to happen!  If you’re wanting to attract a realationship and some romance into your life – you need a clean bedroom to help you manifest that!  If you’re in a relationship already and want to spice things up or keep those flames going – you’re going to need a clean bedroom to manifest that!  If you’re trying to conceive – guess what – you’re going to need a clean bedroom to help manifest that!  So look around your room again.  What things in your room are “blocking” that sexy time energy?  A pile of bills and paperwork from work is probably not helping you or your partner feel relaxed and in the mood.  Kid’s toys cluttering up the floor are probably not helping either.  If you live alone, then things that remind you that you’re single and make you feel lonely or sad are not going to help you attract a partner – or simply feel okay with being single!  A really simple thing to do when trying to decide what to keep or not (this applies to every room) is to pick an item – look at it and ask, “Do I feel good when I look at this?”  If not – you need to let go of that item!  Once you get rid of things that make you feel bad, or clutter that is detracting from the romance factor in your bedroom – you can then start looking for things to decorate the room to help promote attraction, sex, romance, or fertility.  But don’t just add these things on top of or next to clutter!  That clutter will just drain away any effect those items might have had!

Self-Care & Sanctuary
Another purpose of the bedroom has a lot to do with self-care.  We pick out our clothes, get dressed, and put on our shoes in the mornings.  In the evenings we undress.  We recover from illness or sickness in our bedrooms too.  We may do things to “wind down” or relax in our bedroom such as reading, watching tv or a movie, and cuddling with the kids (or the cat or dog)! It’s where our day begins and ends.  So as you look around your room, ask yourself – on what note am I beginning and ending each day with this environment?  It should be somewhere you feel safe, comforted, relaxed, and truly yourself!  This is why so many people refer to their bedroom as a “sanctuary” – it should be a safe place not just for your body, but for your mind and spirit!  Keeping this space organized and clutter free will help it feel like a sanctuary.  A problem some people have is that their bedroom becomes a “dumping ground” for things through the day.  Don’t have time to fold and put away those clothes right now?  Just throw them in the bedroom.  Need to go through this pile of mail or paperwork, but don’t have time right now?  Throw it in the bedroom.  It becomes the “I’ll deal with it later” space because of the Out Of Sight – Out Of Mind concept.  If you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist.  Until you go to bed – then you remember it!  But by then you’re tired and on your way to bed, so it gets ignored again “until tomorrow”.  Since any guests who come over won’t see your bedroom, you feel like it’s okay for this room to be messy, because no one sees it but you.  But what kind of message are you sending yourself with that attitude?  You’re saying that other people’s thoughts/feelings/opinions are more important than your own!  You’re saying that your own comfort comes last!  Taking the time to create a Sanctuary in your bedroom is a Scared act of Self-Love!  You deserve to have a place to unwind, relax, and feel safe!  A place where you can just be you!

What next?
So I’ve given you some ideas of what your bedroom energy should be focused on, and why.  You’ve looked around your room and asked all the right questions.  Now it’s time to tackle some clutter and start clearing your space!  We’ll use the same process we did in the bathroom;

Clearing The Space In Your Bedroom

  • Choose a time to focus on your bedroom.  It can be as simple as 15 minutes a day for a few days, to one hour . . . whatever works best for you.  Don’t overwhelm or overwork yourself!  Pick one area to focus on at a time.
  • Gather what you need.  Trash bags, a box for items to donate, cleaning products.  If you want- bring a candle or some incense and crystals to set up a temporary altar.  This will help you stay focused on your task as a spiritual process of releasing and cleansing.  Think about what Deity you may want to help you, or what Deity you will dedicate your work to.  .
  • When you’re ready to begin, start by simply sitting in your bedroom.  Think about the type of space you want it to be.  Sleep, Romance, Sanctuary, etc.  Visualize how you would like the room to look.  Visualize yourself and your family being healed, comforted, and blessed when they use the space.  Light your candle and say a prayer to the Deity you want to work with.  Ask for their blessing on your work and your bathroom
  • Go to the area you’ve chosen to work on.  This might be the bed, dresser, desk, bookshelf, or side-tables.  (Just pick ONE area at a time!  Take everything out.  Wipe down the surface, visualizing that it is not only physically cleaned, but energetically cleaned.  Then pick up each item you took out.  Ask the following; *Do I need this?  *Do I actually use this?  *Does it promote the energy that I want in this space?  Does it make me feel good when I see it? If your answer to any of these questions is NO – you can either throw it away, donate it, or put it aside to be put somewhere else.  (If it is something you need and use, but doesn’t belong in the bedroom you can keep it but it needs to be “rehomed” to a more appropriate area)
  • Put back neatly the things you are keeping.  Take the throw-away items to the trash.  Put items that need to be put away somewhere else in a small box and take them out of the bedroom.
  • Feel gratitude!  Thank yourself for releasing things you don’t need!  Thank yourself for taking the time to cleanse this space and dedicate it to becoming an area of Sanctuary.  You may choose to smudge with sage or a blessing incense.  Thank whatever Deity you worked with for their blessing on the area.
  • Dedicate yourself to keeping that area clutter-free.  Maybe once a week you can take 15 minutes to quickly look through your bedroom and make sure that only the things that belong there are there.  Pick one day as a “bedroom rescue” day – say Mondays – and make a reminder to yourself to simply bless and maintain this area once a week.  OR you might choose to do a quick “sweep” every morning.  Since you wake up in your bedroom every morning to get ready for your day – why not just take an extra minute or two while you’re in there to keep things clear and make sure clutter doesn’t build up. Same for the evenings – part of your bedtime routine can be just a couple minutes to pick up / neaten your bedroom again before you go to sleep.

Repeat as needed in other areas of your bedroom until it’s done!  Remember it can be just one area a day, or all in one day depending on your time and energy.  Just take breaks between areas if you need to!

Need some missions to help you get started?  Sometimes if a room is particularly cluttered it can be overwhelming to think about cleaning it up.  Here are a few missions from to get you started.

Mission # 1 – Clean Out Under Your Bed!  Go on, pull everything out!  Chances are, there’s a lot under there you didn’t realize was there!  You may find something you had lost!  Throw away any trash, put things where they belong.  You’ll feel a difference in the room once this is done!

Mission # 2 – Organize your sock drawer.  Get rid of socks that don’t have mates, underwear that is old and worn out, or things that don’t fit.  Get rid of anything that may have been hastily put in the drawer, put it away or get rid of it!  This is a simple task but you’ll feel better when you can just reach in the drawer and grab the socks or underwear you want without digging around!

Mission # 3 – Dust!  Get a washcloth or a duster and get those “up high” places around your room.  Shelves, windowsills, and the tops of dust frames.  Don’t obsess, just quickly wipe away any dust that has gathered!

Mission # 4 – Clear off the tops of the nightstands or bedside tables.  Put away books you aren’t reading, throw away those old tissues, water bottles, or candy wrappers!  It will make a huge difference to have a flat surface next to your bed that only has a few things on it!  A lamp, a book, a crystal or gemstone, or a framed photograph of family/loved ones.

Mission # 5 – Clear off the top of your dresser or desk.  Same as the bedside table, a flat surface with a few intentionally placed items will make the space so much more inviting!  Get a bowl or jewelry box for your jewelry instead of just having it dumped on the dresser.  Have a plate for your keys and change from your pockets.  Place a few items that make you feel happy and safe and promote the energy of your bedroom – then put everything else away!

After you’ve done those 5 missions, you might feel brave enough to begin working on the hidden areas – like inside the dresser drawers!  The closet?  The desk drawers?  Yeah there are plenty of hidden places in our bedrooms holding clutter.  Don’t worry about getting it all done in a week!  Just work on a little at a time, when you have time and feel up to it.

Good Luck!

Clear Your Space – The Bathroom

Ready to start clearing your space and turning your whole home into a spiritual haven?  I’m starting this week in the bathroom.  Feel free to join me!  Comment with a link to your own blog or just a simple text comment with your goals and progress!

Identify The Purpose of Your Bathroom
What kind of energy do you want in your bathroom?  I consider the bathroom the home of the Water element in my home, as it tends to have a lot of water energy with the shower or bath and sinks!  Bathrooms are a center of self-care and healing.  We release toxins on a daily basis (yes, everyone poops!) wash our faces, brush our teeth, bathe, and beautify ourselves in our bathrooms.  So if you start to think of your bathroom as your center of Healing and Self-Care you can focus on what things in that room serve that purpose.
The bathroom can be an important area for the Household Witch.  Bathing is often recommended to clear your energy before ritual, and the bath or shower can be a powerful place to focus energy for healing.  For some, the act of Hair Brushing or braiding can be part of a ritual or spiritual practice, as can the other “mundane” tasks of daily self care like putting on makeup- brushing teeth, taking vitamins or medications, etc. Keep these in mind as you work on your bathroom.

Clearing The Space In Your Bathroom

  • Choose a time to focus on your bathroom.
For the bathroom I think a Goddess of Healing or a Goddess associated with Water would be perfect!  Don’t fixate just call upon who you feel comfortable working with.
  • When you’re ready to begin, start by simply sitting in your bathroom.  Think about the type of space you want it to be.  Healing, Comforting, Blessing, Cleansing.  Visualize how you would like the room to look.  Visualize yourself and your family being healed, comforted, blessed and cleansed when they use the space.  Light your candle and say a prayer to the Deity you want to work with.  Ask for their blessing on your work and your bathroom
  • Go to the area you’ve chosen to work on.  This might be the countertop, the medicine cabinet, under the sink, or the shelves in the shower/bath.  Take everything out.  Wipe down the surface, visualizing that it is not only physically cleaned, but energetically cleaned.  Then pick up each item you took out.  Ask the following; *Do I need this?  *Do I actually use this?  *Does it promote the energy of healing and cleansing that I want in this space?  If your answer to any of these questions is NO – you can either throw it away, donate it, or put it aside to be put somewhere else.  (If it is something you need and use, but doesn’t belong in the bathroom you can keep it but it needs to be “rehomed” to a more appropriate area)
  • Put back neatly the things you are keeping.  Take the throw-away items to the trash.  Put items that need to be put away somewhere else in a small box and take them out of the bathroom.
  • Feel gratitude!  Thank yourself for releasing things you don’t need!  Thank yourself for taking the time to cleanse this space and dedicate it to becoming an area of Healing.  You may choose to smudge with sage or a blessing incense.  Thank whatever Deity you worked with for their blessing on the area.
  • Dedicate yourself to keeping that area clutter-free.  Maybe once a week you can take 15 minutes to quickly look through your bathroom and make sure that only the things that belong there are there.  Pick one day as a “bathroom rescue” day – say Wednesdays – and make a reminder to yourself to simply bless and maintain this area once a week.  OR you might choose to do a quick “sweep” every morning.  Since you probably use your bathroom every morning to get ready for your day – why not just take an extra minute or two while you’re in there to keep things clear and make sure clutter doesn’t build up.

Repeat as needed in other areas of your bathroom until it’s done!  Remember it can be just one area a day, or all in one day depending on your time and energy.  Just take breaks between areas if you need to!

For my Bathroom Cleansing & Blessing, I’ll probably work with Yemaya – Mother Goddess of the Ocean that I work with for Healing bath rituals.  Her healing and mothering energy seem the perfect compliment to my focus and purpose for my bathroom!  I’ll post at the end of the week with my progress / results of my bathroom blessing!  I’d love to hear about your process too!  Comment here or on my facebook page!
