Temperance and the Sagittarius Full Moon

Taking Aim and Transmutation;
The Energy of the Moon in Sagittarius and Temperance

The Full Moon in Sagittarius quickly approaches.  With the Sun in Gemini – the sign that lies in opposition of Sagittarius.  At the time of the full moon we find a balance between the Sun and Moon – as the two opposite signs highlight each other and blend into a powerful energy.  This balancing and blending is one of the main lessons of Sagittarius, so it is a particularly strong theme with this Full Moon.

Gemini is the Mutable Air sign – intelligent and calculating, but impossible to pin down.  Sagittarius is the Mutable Fire sign – passionate and motivated but easily adapting to new situations.  Higher thought and the energy of ideas is transmuted through Sagittarius’ focus and drive, allowing us to take aim for the true goal of our heart.

The Tarot Card related to the Sign of Sagittarius is Temperance.  Within the imagery of this card are the themes of balance and blending.  Archangel Gabriel stands with one foot on the earth (physical realm) and one foot in the water (Spiritual Realm) while blending the Elixir of Life from two cups.  The Sun is rising and flowers blooming, a reminder that “Time Heals All Things” and sometimes time is one of the ingredients we need to blend to work our magic.

The Temperance card is one of Healing – but with a lesson that healing comes with dedication, faith, time, and using exactly the right ingredients – all in moderation.  Sagittarius, The Archer, has great focus and drive, but must apply this carefully!  One must learn a skill with patience, dedication, the right tools and the right teachers before they are a master.  The downfall of Sagittarius is rushing into battle unprepared, but if they can listen to the messages of Temperance – Moderation, Timing, Blending – then their success is assured!

Spend some time with the Temperance Card this Full Moon.  If you don’t have tarot cards, you can simply read about and think about the message of this card.  You can use the following questions as Journaling prompts or to meditate on.

  • Where in your life do you need to practice moderation?
  • What needs to be better balanced, simplified, or blended in your life?
  • What are you feeling hopeful and optimistic about?
  • How are you balancing, blending, or combining the resources you have?
  • What in your life needs healing?

For this Full Moon, think about your goals, and how you can use the lessons of Temperance to help you achieve those goals!  You can read more about this card here;

Temerance – Rider-Waite Smith Tarot

Temperance And Archangel Gabriel

Angels can be found in the imagery of several traditional Tarot Cards.  In the traditional Rider-Waite Smith tarot there are Archangels represented on 6 Major Arcana cards.

What are Angels?  The word Angel comes from the Greek word “angelos” which means “messenger”.  Angels are seen in many cultures and mythologies as Divine Messengers of God.  The Greek Word “archangelos” meaning “Chief Messenger” is where we get the word Archangel – and Archangels are generally seen as the Leaders of the Angels.  Primarily found in texts of Judaism and Islam, though mentions of these Divine Messengers also can be found in Ancient Greek texts, in all instances they serve as messengers between people and the Divine, bringing news or prophesy that is beneficial to the people they interact with in some way.  Angels are generally androgynous (No gender), though they are usually given a gender through an artist’s or writer’s interpretation of their appearance.   Modern encounters with Angelic beings have led many people to feel that Angels and Archangels are Divine beings of Light, who do not particularly care what religion or spiritual path you follow, but are still benevolent messengers interested in helping humans.

Gabriel is one of only four Archangels that are mentioned by name in the Bible, and appears frequently as a messenger.  It was Gabriel who interpreted Daniel’s dreams in the book of Ezekiel.  Most notoriously, Gabriel is the Archangel who brought Mary the news of her pregnancy, and later announced the Birth of Jesus to the shepherds.  It is said the it will be Gabriel who blows the Trumpets of judgement at the end times.

In Islam, it is said that Archangel Gabriel is the one who revealed the Koran to Muhammed.

In all of these recorded instances dealing with Archangel Gabriel – there is an overall theme: Gabriel’s messsages involved the transmutation of the Spiritual into the Physical.  There was often a message about Timing (Divine Timing) Harmony, and Faith… and a blending of the spiritual with the earthly.  David’s dreams guided him to become King, Mary became the mother of the Divine incarnate in human form, Muhammed’s visions became translated into the Koran.  This is where we see the perfection of the Archangel Gabriel placed symbolically on the Temperance card.

Temperance is about harmoniously blending the spiritual with the physical.  A being who is a Divine Messenger, with wings so they can bring messages from the Heavens down to Earth, is seen standing on a shoreline.  One foot on the earth (material realm) and one foot in the river (spiritual realm).  We must moderate and find balance between the spiritual and the physical worlds – and remember that we are both Physical and Spiritual beings.   Archangel Gabriel is holding two cups, and pouring a liquid in a continuous stream.  These cups represent vessels of spiritual and material worlds, and pouring between them is the Elixir of Life.  Both the vessels and the stream represent the principles of the Divine Feminine as receptivity, cooperation, harmony, creativity, and balance.  In the background the sun is rising and in the forefront flowers are blooming on the riverside – both of these remind us of the card’s message about Timing; sometimes we must have faith and wait for the right time for things to happen.  Trusting that things happen at the right time, or that you will know when the time is right is one of Archangel Gabriel’s chief messages, and this card was originally named “Time”.

Working with Archangel Gabriel:  Archangel Gabriel can help you with issues of Balance, Moderation, Timing, and receiving Messages from the Divine or your Higher Self.  All you have to do is ask!  From my experiences, the Angels and Archangels enjoy working with people in many ways – especially in matters that help you improve your life, your health, and your Spiritual growth.  Gabriel’s aura is a bright copper color, like their trumpet.  Wearing Copper or the gemstone Citrine can help you connect with Gabriel’s energy.  Gabriel is especially fond of helping writers and public speakers (other messengers!) and also is called upon often to help mothers and fathers with parenting.

Centaur Tarot Spread

As promised in my previous post, here is a Tarot Spread I designed for use with Centaur or Sagittarius energy.  It’s perfect for today’s Full Moon!

As with before any reading or ritual, please remember to ground and center, and set up protections in whatever way you do.  Calling on Archangel Michael, or asking for a ring of angels to protect you, or calling the quarters and elements and setting a circle of protection by visualizing a shield of light around you.  Whatever feels comfortable and safe to you.

Tarot Spread – Lesson of The Centaur
Make sure you read the post all about Centaurs.  There I cover the three gifts or lessons of the Centaur which are; Knowledge/Wisdom, Victory/Assertiveness, and Healing.

With this spread you will use Temperance as a Significator card. Simply find this card in the deck, and place it in front of you.  Meditate on the meanings of this card and the Centaur’s lessons.  Use the affirmation, “I enthusiastically manage my needs and resources to bring about health and harmony”.  Think about the meanings of the Temperance Card of integration, balance, moderation, and transformation.  Think about the Centaurs and how they teach us integration of Healing, Intellect, and Passion.  In what ways in your life do you need this integration and balance?

Prayer (while shuffling the cards)
“I call upon the mighty centaur: warrior, hunter, healer, seeker of wisdom, and great teacher.  I call upon you now, be my teacher.  Show me what I need to know at this time and teach me to inte body, mind, and spirit.”

Divide the deck into three stacks.  Take the first stack from the top of the deck, and place it in position one.  Take the second stack from the deck, and place it in position 2.  The remaining cards go in stack 3.  Just let the cards naturally divide themselves into these stacks.

You will turn the top card of each stack over.

Card 1 is Centaur’s teaching or lesson for you at this time concerning your healing. Picture the Centaur handing you a cup of a healing elixir.  The card will show you what area of life this elixir will help you to heal.  This could be for your physical health, or emotional/spiritual healing.  Take this gift with deep gratitude.
Card 2, the scroll, is Centaur’s message to you about wisdom and learning.  This shows you where in your life you need to apply your intellect.  It could be something you need to learn more about, or an area of life in which you need to apply wisdom and logic rather than force or action.
Card 3, the Sword… this is where Centaur is offering you help in the form of action.  Your passion and assertiveness will help you in this area of life.  This is also where the centaurs will offer to help fight for you to obtain victory in your goal.
Meditate and journal about all three of these cards.  Be sure to interpret them through the lens and lessons of the Temperance card, which reminds you that each of these energies of the cup, scroll, and sword need to be used in moderation, balanced with each other, and integrated into your life with patience.
Thank the Centaurs for their lessons.  You may wish to leave them an offering of some kind (food or drink – they really love wine or alcohol if you have any to put in a small cup or bowl to leave for them in gratitude for their help) or at least sincerely thank them for their help.
Blessed Be!

Hestia’s Monday Musings – Temperance

On Mondays I draw a tarot card for my kitchen altar. I ask Hestia for her advice for the week, regarding my home, household, and family life. At my old blog, Tarot Mom – this weekly post was called “Mommy Time Monday”.  I have asked Hestia for her message that will apply to both myself and my household – and also to my blog readers and followers on Facebook.

Hestia’s Message week of 11/3 to 11/8
TEMPERANCE

Temperance brings us the message of balance and moderation.  Life is so much about the give and take, and for many people it is difficult to find balance in their life. Balance between work and fun; balance between self-care and caring for others, etc.
This card urges us, this week, to take a closer look at our life. What is out of balance? What ingredient is lacking? What is there too much of, and how can we bring that back in to balance?
Above we see The Housewives’s Tarot version of Temperance, the mixer. It reminds me of baking. When you make bread or a cake, you have to put in just the right amount of each ingredient or risk your cake being too dry, to thick, or too wet and not holding together at all.
But it’s not just a one chance thing. As you mix your ingredients, you can adjust. Does the batter feel too thin? Add a little more flour. Is it too thick? Add a tiny bit more oil or water. We have lots of chances -daily opportunities really – to rebalance our lives.
Another version of this card – The Blender from The Kitchen Tarot, reminds us that the other people in our life also contribute to this balance and moderation. Everyone has something to “bring to the table”. So as you think about the areas in life that need some balancing, don’t forget your relationships. Perhaps you need to balance the scales with a friendship, a romantic partner, a parent, or a child.
